Don’t bother snickering at the name of the designer, it only identifies you as a hopeless American Beavis and Butthead fan. Jantze Brogard Asshoff presents Qubic–a flexible storage system that can be wall-mounted or assembled on legs if you can’t handle a level and stud finder. No word on pricing on this, but the on-wall look is a great addition to a modern house or apartment. Since black matches everything, there’s no need to reconsider your paint scheme…

Phillip Grass takes a unique approach to tried-and-true furniture designs. The one pictured above is called the Landing, and is constructed from bent stainless steel, fiberglass and leather. This design is a prototype, but Glass has fully realized projects that are just as fascinating to look at. Phillip Glass does offer a nod to the classic looks of yesteryear with a traditional-looking old-style wooden chair, but that one seems to be the joker in this particular deck. When the Landing hits market, there are plenty of modern design fanatics chomping at the bit to get prices and delivery dates.

Can we just say “wow”? Neuland’s Random book storage solution features compartments of, yes, random size. These attach in the back so there are no visible fasteners to mar that pristine white look. Put a couple of these in a room and you could probably store damn near every book you own . . . or at least most of them. The only thing missing here is a bright red rolling stepladder for contrast.

1 Contemporary has a serious collection of modern lighting like the Chains series pictured above. These designs in red and blue combine rich textured panels with smooth light sources in patterns that will enhance a section of empty wall in small spaces or draw attention to a section of larger rooms. The mod/retro look is great, but we find the 1 Contemporary website design to be a bit baffling–where are the prices for these? The order form is daunting, and this company does not accept credit card orders online. We suggest calling them before faxing your credit card number as suggested for online orders.

Plodes Studios has given storage a whole new face with the Barnacles series. This modern concept looks more like honeycombs to us than, but whatever you call ‘em, they are certainly attention getting. We think these might be even trippier with some kind of light source installed in each one, but that’s probably edging closer to art installation territory than home storage.

The ultra-mod Sputnik has 24 arms with 12 chrome lights and 12 chrome balls; it can be used as either an eye-grabbing table lamp or a placed on the floor. It stands 23 inches high, measuring about 14 inches around without the chrome bulbs. You’ll need to locate a voltage adapter for this one as it was designed in Europe, but why should the EU have all the cool decor? Designed by Paul de Haan, this sells for just under $400 US.

The Moonlight Soundsystem looks just like any of the rest of the cool globes of light in the Moonlight line, with one big exception–these are equipped with speakers up to 200 watts. They are not visible–all you see are the globes of light, which can change color in time with the music. Sure, you could just buy these without speakers as they are very cool all on their own, but imagine watching your guests trying to figure out where the sounds are coming from.
