Inspired by a small, folding basket in a market in Bulgaria, designers Blasius Osko and Oliver Deichman envisioned this modern stunner. The Clip Chair by Moooi looks quite fascinating as is, but beyond its seated shape the Clip Chair folds into a flat form for easy carrying and storage. This modernized folding chair is made of sleek black beech wood, folding out to create a basket-like seat with a surprising level of comfort. While the price is just a touch higher than your standard steel folding chair, you can rest assured that very few others in the world will have any as nice as this…

Furniture design firm Atlantico sums up its design inspiration quite simply: “design driven by nature”. With that, the Lin Pod Bench must be their thesis– for this bench fuses simple, modern design with a full embrace of nature. Beyond its seating space, the Lin Pod Bench includes a potted plant base, allowing for any manner of indoor plant life you wish to add to your seating environment. As plants give life to any home, they have never been more directly in harmony with your point of leisure. The Lin Pod Bench is available with either cotton or wool upholstery and a walnut, light or dark oak wooden base. More pictures after the break…

This is a first for our eyes, GearCravers. We’ve never seen a rug design that involves two dimensions of negative space– the blank mid-section of this rug and the floor below it. The Top Floor Ethereal Rug is an instant favorite. An organic floral pattern reaches into the whitespace on this rug, yet this pattern is more than grooves and layers. Designer Esti Barnes has cut these layers right through the rug itself, exposing the bare wood below. This is one concept that certainly needs to be explored further…

Late last week, Inhabitat published some images of what quickly became the most lust-worthy lamp we’d seen in some time. The Cosca Design Penta Lamp, as designed by Luca Casarotto, is a recycled polyethylene suspension lamp with moveable pieces that allow for different patterns of emitted light. The central ring at the bottom of the lamp, shown above, can be pulled down so that the arms of this lamp will bend and shape the light. When fully extended and closed, the lamp can focus downward on a specific object. While this wild new lamp is not yet available to the public, we will patiently await its production… [thanks inhabitat]

Designer Tokujin Yoshioka set out to make a new piece of modern furniture that truly exemplifies comfort. In partnering with Italian furniture manufacturer Cassina, Yoshioka has delivered a lounge chair so comfortable, there was only one possible name for it. The Cassina Heaven Lounge Chair is not just a point of pride for Yoshioka, but the new gem in Cassina’s collection. While we’ve yet to take a seat in the Heaven chair, we can say that its appearance is certainly divine. If it lives up to its name with comfort, this chair could become a new staple in modern furniture.

A common knock on modern furniture like this is that it is “different just for the sake of being different”. The extending wood on the Martin Sprouse 3 Chord Desk is certainly different, but does it provide any concrete utility? In this case, it certainly does. If this were in our office, the wood extension in the rear of this desk would hold our table lamp, the piece to the side would support a leafy green plant and the piece to our side would be perfect for food, drink or otherwise. The business end of this table stays in white– as do our office supplies, keyboard, mouse and monitor. We’ll have more from Martin Sprouse in the coming weeks. To start, the 3 Chord desk is our personal favorite…

This fresh example of table lamp origami is ready to liven up your office. A busy work space is calmed by this design– and a dull den is brought to life by its geometric form. The West Elm Faceted Table Lamp is a lesson in modern geometric design. While its color scheme is minimal, its base is is angular and reflective. A lamp like this is designed to be the centerpiece of your room. So if you’re looking for that one design element that really ties the room together? If the rug ain’t doing it, you need a good lamp. Start here, GearCravers…

For those of you who are aware of the modern prefab home movement, bear with us while we catch the rest up to speed. Imagine that your next home were to be manufactured in sections in a warehouse, delivered to your property, then pieced together and finalized into the perfect modern home. This technique has been around for decades, as “manufactured homes” and trailers have been delivered at a low cost to home owners. But what works for retirees in Florida and trailer communities across the country also works for the modernist movement. Some of the worlds brightest architects have turned to prefabricated construction techniques to lower costs and increase quality. The perfect example is Santa Monica’s LivingHome, as designed by architects Ray Kappe and Kieran Timberlake. Continue reading, GearCravers, for more about how the prefab movement has come alive in this LivingHome.
