Wednesday StyleCrave: Corpus Spring/Summer 08

Corpus co-founder, Keith Richardson put it best in a recent interview: “we set out to do clothes that were not cheap but also not trying to be a uber fashion… quality fashionable clothes that you can wear but didn’t look like you were walking down a runway.”

The line, started five years ago as a denim line by Richardson and old friend Jerrod Cornish, just wrapped up their Fall 08 collection, but you should be more concerned with the late-50s-cool-meets-early-90s-street hotness they have on display for the Spring/Summer season.

The collection is both stylish and wise, casual but with bite, and, despite it’s edge, actually pretty grown-up. With the possible exception of the leather and the cut of the pants, I think my grandfather could rock pretty much all of it.

Start with the tops. Breezy cotton, Westside Story-retro cuts, delicately eccentric collars (peep the band collar on the blue-check shirt and shawl collar on the pink button-down), relaxed fit plaids, high-cut sleeves, and light hoodies for the cool nights– joints you can work all summer and well into the early fall.

Outerwear. The rockabilly centerpiece of the whole collection is a head-turning, perfectly cropped leather jacket that would have Brando and Dean arguing like schoolboys over who saw it first. Speaking of school, Corpus also serves up some super collegiate button-up cardigans and sweater vests that may spark WASP-y hallucinations of studying Philosophy on a yacht in Hyannisport.

For good measure, they threw in an exquisitely simple mackintosh-style raincoat. Use it to ward off the ocean spray or to stay dry in the downtown drizzle. And, everything is smartly complemented by Corpus’ signature, slim-fit (not skintight) jeans and khakis.
