project nighthawk case mod

Do you like this image from TheBestCaseScenario.com? For the weekend, GearCrave decided to stray from the path a little bit and find something that went beyond our standard buyers guide. While you can still hire a few of the folks we’ve listed below to do your case mod, we think this is definitely Crave-Worthy. Check out these crazy designs! Some are (supposedly) functional, some are decorative, but all of them are just plain nuts in all the right ways. Check ‘em out below the fold for GearCrave’s top 5!

5. The Mac O’Lantern comes to our attention a bit late for Halloween, but they’re fair game to stay on display til Turkey Day as far as we’re concerned, because this re-utilization of ancient Mac Classics is too funny. The maniacs at BadBanana took some Krylon Fusion Pumpkin Orange, some jpegs, and downloaded JPEGView from The Mac Orchard for the face display.

4. EnglishRussia.com showed off this one, which is supposedly able to dispense beer. Whether or not it’s true, this is a seriously Jules Verne-looking contraption. Who has the patience to make all this stuff work properly? What happens when it springs a leak? Bye-bye CPU, that’s what.

3. Another alcohol-related mod; somebody at MetkuMods.com REALLY likes blended Scotch. This is a real, functioning PC, modded into an (empty) Ballentine’s bottle. Heat was an issue in the early stages of this design for obvious reasons, but it seems the designer manged to solve that problem, at least long enough to crack open a cold one and celebrate. We’re guessing he’s sick of spirits for the moment. If you try this one at home, make sure your case is completely empty and dry, so don’t try the mod just after polishing off the Scotch, eh?

2. This Alien mod from TheBestCaseScenario.com is only really missing the slime and a face-hugger popping out of the CD tray. Hands down the creepiest mod on the list, but we also like this Matrix Rebirth case, too:

Check out the cool Matrix-green glow from the CD tray, and what looks like slimy bio-mechanics encased in glass hovering above the case. Is that an embryo tube? Nice icky touch.

And now for the hands-down winner of craziest mod:

1. The Steampunk Laptop by Datamancer is just amazing. That key on the lefthand side of the unit is actually used to turn on the machine, which is just freakin’ great. It’s delicious in all its retro glory. This is what the future looked like to guys like H.G. Wells and Jules Verne. Absolutely the coolest aftermarket thing that’s happened to a laptop, ever.

Remember that goofy old Kevin Costner movie that spawned the catchphrase, “If you build it, they will come?” That should be updated. If you build it, someone will definitely mod it to create a work of art. Or at least an amusing gadget worth a laugh or two. One day GearCrave will get around to revisiting this list to see what other innovations have happened since all this . . . some of us can hardly wait to see what designs come next.
