Weekend Getaway: Le Tour de France

While we’ve got a busy day of parades, grilling and fireworks still ahead of us, nearly 200 of the world’s finest competitors are preparing for the start of the greatest race in the sport of cycling. Le Tour de France 2008 begins tomorrow, Saturday July 5th. This race does not translate to any sport in American culture– although like Baseball, Le Tour is the national pastime of France. For those who have yet to watch the Tour de France, this race is a chess match with every turn of the pedal crank. Riders are not just endurance freaks, they exert skill, force and psychological prowess as they negotiate through each leg of the 2,175 mile race. This event isn’t just about the competitors, its about the culture. The countryside of France comes alive for Le Tour, with dedicated fans following the race from leg to leg with a car, a tent, and a cooler full of fine French beer and wine. We encourage you to watch a leg or two of this race to get an understanding of its magnitude. If you’re already a fan, we suggest you consider a trip to France to travel along this historic route and watch the event unfold…
