As a long time fan and listener, GearCrave editor Mike Payne was proud to sit down with the Wunderkind of electro nostalgia, Warp Records’ own Jimmy Edgar. For those unfamiliar, Jimmy Edgar is an electronic music composer and DJ, the latest and greatest in the Detroit Techno bloodline that started with DJ’s Atkins, Saunderson and May. Edgar’s style could be compared to an orgy of early Timbaland, Prince (see “Erotic City”), and Herbie Hancock a la “Rockit”. The sawtooth synth leads, roughly reverberated drums, and the swelling arpeggios and pads of early synth electro are very much alive in the music of Jimmy Edgar. Continue reading below for our “thirteen questions” with Mr. Edgar, who shared with us his takes on gear, music, Norwegian models and Myspace.

What artists have had the greatest influence on your sound?

Adonis, Juan Atkins, Prince, Michael Jackson, Herbie Hancock

What was the first record you ever bought? And where did you buy it?

Posatronix “Shake It” Armando “100% of disin you” at Record Time in Detroit

If you could erase one musical act from history (with/without violence) who would it be?

Why would I do that? The bad ones just make us good ones look better… Whats pleasure without pain?

If push comes to shove, what is your all-time favourite album?

Laid Back “White Horse” on repeat. I could also do with the Lost Highway soundtrack minus the Rammstein songs.

What’s your most memorable on the road story?

3 model friends and I got arrested in a hotel with 212 pills of vicodin in Norway. That was fun, they ended up letting us go and the story made a good press story. The night before we got tear gassed during my set in Switzerland, I never found out why.

At the moment, what is your favorite website/webservice?

Myspace, Its very busy these days and I appreciate connecting with fans.

Where is your favorite place to buy shop for clothing online?

Secretary, both the book and movie/commentary are amazing.

Mac, MPC

What is your most indulgent ever purchase?

Every designer jacket I own over 2,000$

Tell us a fact about yourself we probably don’t already know.

I’m celibate right now finishing my next album.. I had to kick the habit and make myself suffer to release frustration on my work.

We look forward to hearing that new album, Jimmy– we’re sure those sacrifices will make for one powerful album. For those of you who haven’t yet heard Jimmy Edgar’s music, do yourself a favor and check him out on Myspace (we recommend listening to “Color Strip Warren”, “My Beats”, “I Wanna Be Your STD”…), or go straight to Bleep.com to audition his tunes and download MP3s. You can also find Jimmy Edgar albums available on WarpMart.com or from iTunes.
