William Gibson is the father of Cyberpunk. He’s the man responsible for the word “cyberspace”, and his stories foretold the rise of the internet long before people know what a modem was. One of those eerily forward-thinking books? The incredibly cool Neuromancer. Don’t remember that one? How about Johnny Mnemonic? Gibson wrote the story and the screenplay for the movie about the man with 80 GB of computer storage surgically placed into his head. 80 gigs was a lot of space in 1981. Especially jammed into your skull.
Gibson is back with a vengence with the excellent Spook Country. We won’t spoil the story for you, but when Gearcrave checked out William Gibson doing a reading from the new book while in Chicago, we knew it’s destined to be another New York Times bestseller. Spook Country is funny, just as exciting as any of his other work, and involves some of the same characters that showed up in his last work, Pattern Recognition.
Gibson’s appearance in Chicago was great, if for no other reason than watching how he handled rabid fanboys (”I love your work, I love everything you’ve ever done, can I have your sweat?”) and discussed his creative process. When asked how he gets his creative inspiration, Gibson grinned and said, “Walking around and having a life!” but also said that the blank screen tends to make you want to fill it up with words. Too true!
The strangest revelation for some at the reading? Gibson saying he is not a technology geek! (He added that he ain’t a Luddite, either. Fair enough.)
If you haven’t caught William Gibson fever, you owe it to yourself to check out his nine novels and see for yourself. Otherwise, you may as well stick your computer in mothballs and amuse yourself with re-runs of Lost In Space.Yes, Gibson is that good.
