In the vein of Scorsese and Coppola, filmmaker James Gray’s We Own The Night weaves a tale of family, crime, conspiracy and suspense. The plot follows two brothers– one a loyal police officer (Mark Wahlberg) like their father (Robert Duvall), the other a night club owner with growing ties to the drug trade (Joaquin Phoenix). As Phoenix’s character is solicited to take a more active role in the drug underworld, his loyalty to his family’s law enforcement legacy is tested. Upon the murder of their father by the very same drug ring, the brothers unite to take down the murderous drug syndicate together. Wahlberg, Phoenix and Robert Duvall fill these roles as you’d expect– precise, convincing, and with plenty of bravado. Eva Mendes, on the other hand, achieves new ground in We Own The Night, namely with her first (albeit fiery) on screen sex scene.
