GearCrave Giveaway: Rough Guide to Video Games (x5)

Wednesday, October 1, 2008 12:30PM - By Mike Payne

If you haven’t yet heard of Rough Guides, you’re not alone.  Having long ago reached critical mass in the UK, Rough Guides began as travel guides that were targeted at the informed traveler, not to students or high brow culturalists.  In the 80s, the BBC picked up Rough Guides to develop a TV show, providing no nonsense introductions to subjects which had been poorly represented in the past.  Fast forward to present, Rough Guides have reached a wide range of topics– and a wider geographic audience.  Rough Guides reached out to GearCrave to share with us a new guide they’re releasing throughout the world, one that our readership will find instantly relevant– the Rough Guide to Video Games.

Before you form an impression on just what the Rough Guide to Video Games is, its important to note that this isn’t some dated guide with cheat codes and strategies.  It is a “travel guide” through this history of video games, an in-depth look at the stories, the systems and the people that have built gaming into what it is today.  In short, its the ultimate coffee table book for the geek in your life…  Want one for your own coffee table?  Rough Guides has offered to give away five free copies of the book to GearCrave readers.  As always, you can find out how after the jump…

To qualify for a free copy of the Rough Guide to Video Games, you must sign up and comment. Here’s how:

  • Sign up for the GearCrave email newsletter. (you can do so here, unless you’ve already signed up for a past giveaway)
  • Comment on this page– and share with us your top 3 favorite video games of all time.

It’s that simple. We’ll select five winners at random at the end of the week.  Please note that this giveaway is only available to U.S. readers 18 years of age or older.  Best of luck GearCravers, and thanks to Rough Guides for joining GearCrave in this giveaway. This contest will end on Tuesday, October 7th, 2008 at 11:59p.m.  Winners will be announced the next day. Best of luck, GearCravers!

You know, this is AMAZING. From Coleco Vision to Atari. From Nintendo to Sega and now the Xbox 360 and the PS3, it’s easy to forget all the advancements that have been made. This would be a great addition to my coffee table for sure.

    Favorite games of all time:

1.) EarthBound (SNES) - Favorite RPG of all time, favorite game ever made. One of the best classic style RPGs ever made with fantastic humor, entertaining storyline, unique graphic style, and music so AMAZING, I orgaized a remix project devoted solely to EarthBound (check my link)

2.) Gitaroo Man (PS2) - People go nuts over Guitar Hero and Rock Band, but this is the best rhythm game ever made and it doesn’t require a plastic instrument. An innovative control system and one of the greatest original soundtracks to ever appear in a video game. The only downsides are it’s length and the shameful fact it never got a sequel from Koei, though it did get a slightly expanded port on the PSP. developer iNiS has gone on to develop the Ouendan series for import DS, Elite Beat Agents in the US and are making Lips for the Xbox 360. If you missed this game, try it NOW.

3.) Resident Evil 4 (Wii) - Originally released on the GameCube it was an amazing game and made me actually enjoy a Resident Evil game. Then it was ‘poor’ted to the PS2 and it wasn’t nearly as good as the Cube version mainly due to lessed graphics and a worse control scheme, despite added content. The definitive release was easily the Wii version. Taking the Cube’s more powerful graphics, the PS2’s added content and a new control scheme taking advantage of the Wii, you have the best version of the best action title in recent years. Engaging, thrilling, violent and GORGEOUS, this is the pinnacle of the Resident Evil series and if RE5 is supposed to stray more to Gears of War style gameplay than what RE4 was, it’ll probably remain the best Resident Evil game made.

There you go, my top 3 video games and why I love them so. I’d love to add this book to my shelf! Hope I get picked!
