Skate Study House Skateboard-inspired Mod

Newport Beach-based design firm Skate Study House takes its inspiration from contemporary design, California living and most importantly- skate board culture. Works like the Noguchi coffee table, the Nelson bench, the Eames Lounge and more are reproduced with the features of a classic skateboard deck. The “Jet Set Lounge” shown above, is a skateboard-inspired take on the original Le Corbusier Lounge. This version uses neoprene wetsuit material used by surfers and 8 skateboard decks as support. For those with an eye for modern furniture and a reverence for skateboard culture, you must see the rest of this collection. Continue reading after the jump for more skate-inspired innovations from Skate Study House.

A GearCrave favorite, the Noguchi coffee table inspired the skate style version by Skate Study House, the Tokyo Lounge Table. Where the original employed dark, smooth, geometric wood as its base, the Tokyo table uses a split skateboard deck in the same fashion. The template for this skateboard deck is from the Jim Gray Pro Model, well known in the 80s. This table is available in maple or walnut.

Another all-time GearCrave favorite, the Eames Lounge and Ottoman are reproduced here with skateboard vision. The Godfather Lounge and Ottoman uses 7 walnut laminated skate decks with cushions on the metal frame. Like the Eames Lounge, the Godfather is available in black or white cushions.

Here yet another classic from Eames has been recreated by skateboard. The Stax Chair uses three skate decks in walnut with bent plywood support. While the geometry of the original Eames is harder to reproduce with the skateboard, this piece is still recognizable as a salute to the classic.
Last, the classic, oft-copied Nelson wall clock has found its own inspiration from the half-pipe. The Skate Study House version, shown here as the Astro Clock, uses flourescent skate wheels and bearings in place of the bright painted wood pieces on the Nelson version.

These kind of look like the Eames stuff, only not as streamlined and clean. I love modern furniture but I don’t like paying a ton of money on getting them shipped to me from Tokyo, so I usually go to the [LINK REMOVED]. The have tons of designs and they ship it for free. Maybe look at the Herman Miller stuff too for some mid-century classic stuff too.

Hey Edge, you might want to read this post again. They’re intentional reproductions of classic mod furniture, just like the Eames Lounge and other works. And they’re not made in Tokyo, they’re made in Newport Beach, CA.
They’re supposed to look like the classics, yet made out of skateboards and skate accessories.
