NGC BoomBags: DJ Mixer and Reel-to-Reel

May 1st, 2008 · No Comments

ngc boombags

Following up our post on the sweet Lasonic iPod boombox, we spotted these “Boombags”, gearhead messenger bags with a twist. The NGC DJ Mixer Boombag features a print with two turntables and a dj mixer, the NGC Tape Deck Boombag shows reel-to-reel analog tape. Oh, but it gets better. Both bags include an FM receiver, ipod jack and a set of speakers subtly embedded into the gear print. You can plug your iPod right into these babies and have yourself a classic boombox on your shoulder. Very cool design, sweet idea from NGC.

The Lasonic iPod BoomBox: Now Shipping

lasonic boombox

The mobile stereo, the “boombox”, the “ghettoblaster”– was as much a part of the 1980s as dayglo, greed and good hip hop. Fast forward to modern day, and the ghettoblaster is now a collectors item, sought after by a small subculture of vintage hip hop purists. While the ghettoblaster was a piece of technology that died with the boom of the Sony Walkman and Crack Cocaine, it has been reborn and updated to the iPod generation by the brilliant people at Lasonic. Their generically titled “High Performance Portable Music System” looks like the classic street boombox, but its design may have been a mistake. The Chinese designed Lasonic system is not intended to be a salute to vintage boomboxes, but an actual modern take on consumer audio. While it may have been a mistake that the designers were still stuck in the 80s, its no mistake that the Lasonic iPod BoomBox is ultracool, vintage ghettoblaster magic. If you’re a fan of classic hip hop, Lasonic just inadvertently designed your ultimate iPod dock. Represent.

You’ve never seen an iPod accessory like this one.  This stunning ceramic wonder, the Phonophone II, is a passive amplification system for your iPod earbuds.  Just plug an earbud into the Phonophone II, you’ve gorgeous sound with a serious touch of class.  Okay, you won’t be using these babies at your next dance bash– but they will come in handy for your next dinner party.  CharlesAndMarie says it best, “Truly an amazing object, the Phonofone is clever piece of applied science, a beautiful icon of nostalgia, and an ironic twist on the insular nature of personal listening devices.”  As self-professed audio geeks here at GearCrave, we’re in love.  Kudos to designer Tristan Zimmermann for a stroke of classical music genius…

AKG K701 Studio Headphones

AKG K701 Studio Headphones

The lifetime you’ve spent listening to music has been a blur. The unfortunate part is that you may not be aware of the problem. There’s a new world of music in all the albums you’ve listened to since the first record you bought on your own. To really understand the difference, I suggest a little experiment. Take your current headphones, coat the speakers with Vaseline, then listen. The difference these Austrian made AKG K701s make is identical, but in the opposite direction. Consider it this way– without having heard your music from the audiophile perspective, your ears have been coated in Vaseline until today.

We’re not saying the K701s are the end-all-be-all of audiophile music listening, they are a damn good start. If you’re looking for the right pair of headphones to explore your musical past, the K701s are it. These open-back studio headphones will have you blowing the dust off your old CDs and LPs and listening on repeat. You owe it to yourself to give this a thought– because until now, you’ve been committing the original sin of iPhone earbuds… for shame.
