DVD Tuesday: I’m Not There

May 6th, 2008 · No Comments

i\'m not there

“All I can do is be me, whoever that is.”  Fans of Bob Dylan will instantly respect the collage style biopic “I’m Not There“, directed by Todd Haynes.  The part of Dylan, or at least reverent caricatures of him, are played by a stunning collection of A-List actors.  Christian Bale, Heath Ledger and even Cate Blanchett give life to the Dylan legend in this film.  What saw a quiet release outside of the dedicated fan circles, “I’m Not There” was a critically acclaimed sleeper that is likely to become a DVD hit.  If this film was on your list, get it today– its out now on Amazon.

DVD Tuesday: There Will Be Blood

April 8th, 2008 · No Comments

there will be blood

“As long as there’s oil, there will be blood.”  Upton Sinclair, author of the book adapted into this film, couldn’t have said it better.  Where America’s need for oil brings blood overseas, it all started with early prospectors and entrepreneurs.  Paul Thomas Anderson’s “There Will Be Blood” tells the story of Daniel Plainview (Daniel Day Lewis), a ruthless oil tycoon who wishes to dominate the southwestern US with his lust for black gold.  The result is certainly Anderson’s greatest work to date, an exciting film about greed and vanity absolute in America.  If you’ve been waiting for the DVD, now’s your lucky chance.  “There Will Be Blood” hits Amazon today.  [trailer]

Miami Vice Complete Collection

March 31st, 2008 · No Comments

When Miami Vice first hit television screens back in the 80s, it re-wrote the book on televised action. Shot in a cinematic style, with every color and musical note carefully considered in the early days, this was more like a one-hour movie rather than a cornball TV production. Looking at this show today, it holds up surprisingly well–and in hindsight Miami Vice was much more hip than you might remember. The show featured cameos by Phil Collins, Sheena Easton, Bruce Willis, Frank Zappa, Ted Nugent, too many others to name. The music? Duran Duran, Andy Taylor, The Damned, Devo, Roxy Music, plus some wretched 80s cheese from Phil Collins, Gladys Knight and others. This boxed set has all five seasons uncut, retaining the music from the original–no omissions or deletions near as we can tell. One of the best shows on television, especially for its era.

Three guesses who was in line to be Dirty Harry before Clint got the job:
