Mazda’s Furai Concept Goes Beyond Petroleum

Thursday, July 31, 2008 11:59AM - By Mike Payne

mazda furai

Say what you will about the political and economic impact of ethanol fuel, it has quite a history in performance auto racing.  The higher octane rating of ethanol fuels allows for more efficient production, better performing engines and a cleaner fuel system.  In observing this history and embracing the eco-friendly opportunities of biofuels, Mazda has developed this stunning performance car concept.  The Mazda Furai concept runs on E100 ethanol (meaning zero petroleum added), providing for high performance racing.  While we’re waiting on the racing stats of this supercar, we’re going to drool over the gallery after the jump… [thanks inhabitat]

Beer of the Week: Three Philosophers Belgian Blend

Thursday, July 31, 2008 11:05AM - By Mike Payne

three philosophers

On a whim, we selected a single bottle of Three Philosophers Belgian-Style Blend last week at our local beer boutique.  Brewed by Ommegang Brewery in Cooperstown, NY, Three Philosophers is as authentic as its gets when it comes to Belgian-style beers.  This strong, seasonal Quadrupel is blended with 2% kriek (cherry) lambic, providing a touch of fruity sweetness to this bold amber beer.  It pours a warm, hazy brownish color with plenty of thickness, character and a little lacy head.  Its flavor is complex, but drinkable– dark fruits, yeasts and earthy spice tastes are finished by a sweet, hot alcohol release.  If you can find a bottle, even a six pack, we wholeheartedly suggest picking one up.  This beer is a shining example of the ingenuity of American beercraft, one that every beer snob must taste before they pass.  A+.

afrojacks interview

What is AfroJacks?

First off, I’d like to thank you for coming to my mom’s basement to conduct this interview. Excuse the mess, I just had baseball practice. Well, I think Froman Jacks himself said it best, “Froman takes everything you want to see and hear and stuffs it down your throat so you can choke on awesomeness throughout the day. Let it be known.”

GearCrave Girl of the Week: Germany’s Barbara Meier

Wednesday, July 30, 2008 12:26PM - By Mike Payne

Girl of the Week: Barbara Meier

Germany puts out a hell of a lot more than just good beer, fast cars and spicy sausage. Thanks to early exports like Heidi Klum, Germany’s model scene is fiery and beautiful, just like our lovely girl of the week shown above. Germany’s latest model phenom is Miss Barbara Meier, a relative unknown who achieved fame when she was selected as Germany’s Next Top Model. Unlike America’s version of the show, Germany’s Next Top Model is not hosted by a fire-breathing, shoe-wielding transsexual, but Miss Heidi Klum herself. This stunning natural redhead is not just dead sexy, she’s brilliant. While she had not planned on a modeling career, Meier set her sights on something a little more heady- a career as a mathematician. Want to learn more? We’ll let the pictures speak for themselves, shown after the jump…

Stay Sharp in the Kitchen: Cut Brooklyn Knives

Wednesday, July 30, 2008 10:36AM - By GrahamCumberbatch

Prospect Santoku in Yellow

Cut Brooklyn founder Joel Bukiewicz’s first ambition was to write novels… now he makes knives. An MFA grad who’d moved to Georgia to write but had failed sell his manuscript, he wandered into a tool shed one day, and after a few hours with a belt sander and some old steel, he’d fashioned his first knife. Before long, there was a six-month wait list for one of his handcrafted cutting tools.

After some experimenting, Bukiewicz eventually landed on kitchen knives– He moved back to New York and opened a shop in the Gowanus neighborhood in Brooklyn. Made from high-carbon steel (the kind used in turbine engines) and glass laminate for the handles, each handmade knife is cut, ground, and finished by Bukiewicz himself. What also sets Cut Brooklyn blades apart from other knives, and accounts for their hefty price tag, is the strength of the steel. Generally speaking, the harder the steel the better it is, but if it’s too hard it has a tendency to chip. Whereas most carbon steel knives are about 55 Rockwell (the standard measure of hardness for steel) Bukiewicz got his up to 62 with no chipping issues. The unique finishing touch is the high-gloss handle–in bold, unconventional colors ranging from classic black to brilliant blue to hot pink.
