Retro-Modern: Rolleiflex MiniDigi

Tuesday, September 25, 2007 7:18AM - By J. Wallace

Rolleiflex Minidigi

The original Rolleiflex 6×6 twin lens reflex camera was made in the 1920s in Germany. It was a serious contender with photogs in the know. Now Rollei presents a mini-digital version of the original 6×6, and in today’s mini-digi market, it’s a unique camera indeed. You snap the pic, and turn the hand crank to take the next shot, just like the original. It takes 3mp photos in a square format perfect for blogs and slideshows.

This updated-for-the-21st century Rolleiflex isn’t for everyone, but if you want a small digital that will turn heads and make ‘em look twice, this is the one. The MiniDigi comes in a limited-edition red model which is just as striking as the all-black model.

Sennheiser MX75 Sports Headphones

Monday, September 24, 2007 7:29AM - By J. Wallace

Sennheiser MX75 Sports headphones

The problem with working out with most headphones (like those notorious iPod earbuds) is that they are too flimsy, and pop right out of your ears at just the wrong moment, like when you’re looking both ways before crossing the road. Sennheiser’s MX75 headphones are built especially for working out, with rubber stoppers made to keep the headphones securely in your ear where they belong. There’s also a great “twist-to-fit” feature, and a heavy duty cord that can take the pounding your last set of phones couldn’t.

Surface Tension Video Game Coffee Table: Totally Retro

Monday, September 24, 2007 7:28AM - By J. Wallace

Surface Tension arcade table

The Japanese have been putting these in bars and restaurants for years, but they’ve finally made their way into western homes. This arcade coffee table by Surface Tension has 29 classic games by Taito, and comes with a two-player configuration of those classic controls that you know and love. You can upgrade to a more modern keyboard interface, but why bother? It kills the whole retro feel of this custom-built living room piece. Surface Tension is a UK company, so be sure to get in touch with them about your wall socket needs before commissioning one of these.

Oliver Gregoire Hot Paper Toaster

Hot Paper

Is it art? Is it functional? Oliver Gregoire isn’t really telling. His Hot Paper Toaster is designed to disregard the product itself in favor of creating a striking visual image. Gregiore’s site is full of functional creations — stunningly cool coffee tables, one-of-a-kind art/furniture pieces, and tableware. But the mystery remains; can you stick bread in this thing?

Hot Paper!Hot Paper!

It looks pretty cool, regardless of whether you can cook with it or not.

Thursday, September 20, 2007 8:25AM - By J. Wallace

NextFest Video On YouTube

The Wired NextFest was full of wonders like Brainball, a game that forces you to relax and mellow out your brainwaves in order to score against your opponent. Then there’s the incredible Fasttrack1, the VERY James Bond all terrain vehicle that goes at highway driving speeds, and can drive right into the ocean and keep going, and going, and going. Wait til you see this thing in action! Truly amazing. It’s all in our NextFest video report. (Vid opens in a new window.)

Death Proof Double DVD Set

Thursday, September 20, 2007 8:25AM - By J. Wallace

Death Proof DVD

Tarantino’s hot rod slasher movie is finally out this week on a fabulous double-disc DVD. Death Proof started as a 90-minute second feature in the woefully underrated Grindhouse. Then Tarantino beefed it up to 114 minutes, released it at the Cannes Film Festival, and now it’s ready for your home theatre in all its high-speed, car-punishing glory. See the luscious Zoe Bell take an 18-minute hell ride on the hood of a “Vanishing Point” Challenger at 90 mph! See Kurt Russell chewing the scenery in one of his best all-time psychotic roles ever. This is a must-own, especially if you’ve watched ANY car chase move ever made. Vehicular mayhem, allright!
