Lasers are Cool Again: the SkyLasers Review on GadgetCrave.com

Lasers are Cool Again: the SkyLasers Review on GadgetCrave.com

The good folks over at SkyLasers offered to send a laser our way to review.  At first, we weren’t interested– we’ve been bored of lasers since they hit critical mass, showing up on every cheap toy and key chain.  Then we looked at the facts– this handheld laser pointer can melt rubber, cut plastic, sting the skin and shine for over 100 miles.  “Dude, we’ve got to give one of these a shot”.  We tried this baby out, and boy did we have a lot of fun.  Check out the full SkyLasers review over at GadgetCrave.com.  What’s GadgetCrave?  We’ll be introducing it soon enough…

Visualizing Flickr: Web 2.0 as “The World’s Eyes”

When uploading to Flickr, users set tags, locations and other data– upon which an enterprising group of MIT researchers have built a project called “The World’s Eyes”.  Now exhibited in the Design Museum in Barcelona, “Los Ojos Del Mundo” tracks photographers both local and tourist throughout their photographic adventures in Spain.  As described by MIT’s SENSEable City Lab:

When posting photos online, users of the photo sharing platform Flickr transmit to the world their perspective of a place or event through the lens of a digital camera. Each digital photo file codes both the time when that photo was taken and the location it captures. Analyzing this information allows us to follow the trail that each Flickr photographer travels through Spain. (Un)photographed Spain maps thousands of these public, digital footprints over one year. As photos overlap in certain locations, they expose the places that attract the photographer’s gaze . In contrast, the absence of images in other locations reveal the unphotographed spaces of a more introverted Spain.

The result is a visually stunning display of the collective photographers’ view of Spain.  Where and when do these photographs take place?  What objects and locations are the most photogenic?  We salute the work of MIT’s SENSEable CITY, as the art captured by Flickr photographers has been visualized into collective art from 30,000 feet.  [MIT via datavisualization.ch]

Lenovo Pocket Yoga: Pictures and More

The Lenovo Pocket Yoga, a slim, mysterious new netbook, has been leaked to the press by Lenovo earlier today.  Similar in size and style to the popular Sony VAIO P, the Lenovo Pocket Yoga netbook has shown its face, but has yet to reveal its cards.  While we can project that this little Lenovo will likely be powered by an Intel Atom processor (due to its size and shape), we won’t know for certain until Lenovo releases the full details on specifications.  Should they play those cards right, and Lenovo usually does, we could see the Lenovo Pocket Yoga give the Sony VAIO P a pretty tough fight for the consumer dollar.  Here’s to hoping they’re not going to push their marketing campaign around an “it fits in your pocket!” mesage.  With a name like Pocket Yoga, we’re not betting too highly against that…  [more at flickr, via electronista]

UpdateJohnson Li of the Design Matters Blog has explained that the Lenovo Pocket Yoga was a concept notebook design from 2 years ago.  That means this one may never see the light of day… but it also makes us curious.  If this concept is two years old, and the Sony VAIO P was revealed just months ago, what came first?  Ponder that, friends.

Afternoon Slump: St. Patrick’s Weeked Edition

temple bar dublin msp1 Afternoon Slump: St. Patricks Weeked Edition

St. Patrick’s Day Weekend is upon us.  That means green beer, green rivers and green clothing (on everyone who is NOT Irish).  For some, it means drinking too much and dressing up like a clown, for others– a good celebration amongst friends in respect to St. Patrick and the Irish-American Tradition.  We’ve celebrated many, many a St. Pat’s in the streets of Chicago, where friends and family stumble drunkenly toward the Mecca of our heritage– the Irish Pub.  Will we see you there, GearCravers?  Let us know, we’ll be happy to buy you a pint of the black stuff… or my name isn’t Michael Seamus Payne.

Afternoon Slump: The Office Musical

Some creative editors (with far too much time on their hands) have fused the musical-inspired segments of The Office with the songs that inspired them.  Now when song breaks out in the office, song really breaks out– with a full backing track and all.  Found by the good people at Observation Bubble (a site you should head over and check out for your afternoon slump!)
