70% of the budget was used up by Microsoft…. not weapons, vehicles, equipment, but closed-source software. In the kind of bureaucracies that we have today, this could really do much for the budget. Wow.

Lixux will get bigger, and they will start catching up to Microsoft. However, don't be so smug about the safety of open source. The bigger you are the more attention you naturally attract, and if Umbutu gets big enough, they'll be a target just like Microsoft. Hell, Microsoft'll probably start an entire underground hacker operation, devoted to creating viruses, trojans and worms specifically for linux based operating systems. Ironically, that would be the first truly innovative thing they've done since I started using Windows, and that was back in 1990 or 91.

XP/vista are 100 bucks (US) plus EACH, XP/Vista sever are another 100, and for EACH computer, they have to buy another copy, because unlike Ubuntu/linux, one disk won't provide a operating system for 20+ computers.

The US government needs to go in this direction. Instead of spending money on a stimulus package, that doesn't seem to work, why not save some money?

Vista/Windows 7 does nothing but make organizations spend even more money (to upgrade their current systems). Ubuntu will run on older machines, saving even more money. The other added advantage is that malaware and viruses will be almost non-existent on Ubuntu. Less time for IT support "fixing" a non-working Win-doze install.
